Message from CAO

The 2024–25 academic year brought significant transitions within the Department of Statistics and Data Science, accompanied by continued excellence in service and adaptability. We are pleased to share several key staffing updates that have strengthened our departmental operations and student support. Jose Salas was promoted to the position of Graduate Student Services Advisor, and Stephanie Zaide has seamlessly stepped into his former role as Undergraduate Student Services Advisor. Both have upheld our strong tradition of student-centered support, ensuring consistency and quality in advising during this period of change. In January, Erik Butcher joined the department as Senior Fund Manager, bringing a wealth of expertise in financial oversight. He was soon joined by Charlotte Rose, who now serves as Fund Manager. Together, their commitment to effective contract and grant management has been a valuable asset to our faculty and research administration. While transitions of this magnitude can present challenges, each of these team members has demonstrated professionalism, initiative, and a deep commitment to the department’s mission. Their swift integration has contributed meaningfully to the strength and stability of our operations.

This year also presented unforeseen external challenges. The Palisades Fire, along with other Los Angeles County wildfires in January, disrupted departmental activities, necessitating rapid shifts in teaching modalities, the cancellation of events, and urgent logistical reorganizations. In parallel, the department navigated ongoing cultural and administrative changes at the university level, which required thoughtful analysis, careful planning, and responsive execution.

Through it all, the staff of the Department of Statistics and Data Science have exemplified resilience, adaptability, and unwavering dedication. Their efforts have ensured that both faculty and students remain well-supported, and we look forward to building on this foundation in the year ahead.
