Why did you apply to this program?
Honestly, I applied because data, to me, isn’t just numbers. It’s the tool of tools for making things better. Finding a program that actually empowers idealists to take action was paramount in the selection process. And also, I simply could not pass up the opportunity to spend time with other data nerds who are passionate about doing good.
What do you think about the program?
So far, it’s been just the right balance of inspiration, elbow grease, and a little bit of chaos (but the good kind). My peers just amaze me daily with their creativity and vibrant energy. The program is great about turning complicated concepts into real-world solutions, which really keeps me remembering why I leaped into this adventure in the first place.
What do you hope to gain from the program?
I’m actually hoping to leave with the tools I require to take my grand ideas from mere “cool ideas” to “real-life things.” I want to learn the ropes of the skills that enable me to use data to actually solve problems and develop solutions that matter.
What’s been your favorite part of the program so far?
Honestly, it’s all about doing cool projects with a team. Data analysis is full of great times when you have cool problems and cooler people to work with. Every project feels new and exciting, teaching me just as much about working together as it does about the numbers. It’s awesome to be reminded that data science can be both fun and make a difference.
What would you improve prior to graduating?
First, it would be wonderful to have more projects in which we work directly with local organizations. Nothing beats real-world experience for sharpening our skills. Second, bringing in industry professionals to provide regular lecture series may bridge the gap between theory in the classroom and practice in the real world. Lastly, officializing monthly hangouts would keep our community spirit going and promote our professional networks.
How’s obtaining an MASDS going to help you in your professional life?
With a MASDS under my belt, I’ll feel completely prepared to take on any role where data and social impact intersect. It’s not just about climbing the career ladder. It’s my chance at being the one who takes promising ideas and makes them actual, tangible changes. This degree is not something I’ve got on my resume, though that’s nice, too, it’s evidence that I’ve got the basis to enter the world and actually make a difference, dataset by dataset.
