Dr. Guido Montúfar was promoted to the rank of Full Professor, effective July 1, 2024. The promotion reflects widespread recognition of Dr. Montúfar’s exceptional achievements in research, teaching, and service.
Since joining UCLA in 2017, Professor Montúfar has established himself as a leader in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning. He has authored 77 publications, with an impressive 56 of those produced during his time at UCLA. His research, which applies probabilistic and geometric tools to deepen our theoretical understanding of deep learning, has positioned him as one of the most prominent mathematicians in this area.
Beyond research, Professor Montúfar has shown deep dedication to teaching and mentorship. He has developed new graduate courses in machine learning that draw students from across campus, and he has been praised for his inclusive and interdisciplinary approach to education. His commitment to mentorship is reflected in glowing testimonials from students and in his leadership roles in the department.
Professor Montúfar has also made significant contributions to departmental service, including his role in the development of the Data Theory major and his active participation in graduate admissions and many other initiatives. His promotion is a well-earned recognition of his multifaceted impact on our academic community.
